Introduction to Fly Fishing


These two, 3 hour workshops are for people interested in learning how to fly fish. It is for people that either 1) have never tried fly fishing, or 2) are beginners in need of some direction. 

This is a Free Activity. Registration is required. 
Two sessions: 10:00am to 1:00pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm

The instructor is Mike Pease of Fly Fishing Adventure with Mike Pease, who is a fly fishing guide and educator. He teaches fly fishing at Sacramento State College. He will help you get going and inspired to continue to learn more.

  • Leaders and Tippet

  • Fly Fishing Knots 

  • Fly Fishing Gear

  • Flies, Bugs and Fly Boxes

  • Fly Casting

Classroom Session – 1 hour (Class begins promptly at 10:00 a.m.)

  • Introductions, names, goals,

  • Overview of the class

  • Places to fly fish. Options in this area and elsewhere in Northern California

  • Introduction to each part of the fly rod, reel, and fly line 

  • Leader and Tippet

  • Knots - Learning to tie the double surgeons and clinch knots

  • Essential tools of fly fishing – what you need in your fly vest.

Lawn Area Session – 1 hour 15 minutes

  • The science of fly casting – “loading the rod”

  • The “Fly Swatter” technique for learning the overhead cast

  • Learning to cast a fly rod – the overhead cast. FCSD Foundation Level

Classroom – 45 Minutes

  • Introduction to the essential gear of fly fishing

  • Exploring the world of Bugs, Flies, and the fly box

  • Fly Boxes- Learn the difference between a dry fly, nymph, and streamer and what each of them are imitating

  • Mayflies, Caddis, Stoneflies Identification

  • Types of Flies - Dry flies, nymphs, and streamers

  • Fly Fishing Clubs - why and where to join one
